Godbeer's edition of the surviving transcripts from Nicholas Sension's 1677 sodomy trial was published in Early American Studies (Spring 2014) and the opening chapter of "The Routledge History of Queer America" (2019). Godbeer is author of The Devil's Dominion: Magic and Religion in Early New England (1992), Sexual Revolution in Early America (2002), Escaping Salem: The Other Witch Hunt of 1692 (2004), The Overflowing of Friendship: Love between Men and the Creation of the American Republic (2009), and The Salem Witch Hunt: A Brief History with Documents (2011). His research focuses on religious culture and issues of gender and sexuality in colonial and revolutionary North America. He previously taught at the University of California, Riverside, and at the University of Miami. Richard Godbeer is the founding director of the Humanities Research Center and a professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University. ![]()
